NJ Youth Sabermetrics for Coaches

Sabermetrics is the empirical, statistical analysis of baseball, famously defined as the search for objective knowledge about the game. Coined by Bill James in 1980 from the acronym SABR (Society for American Baseball Research), it uses data to evaluate player performance, create winning strategies, and challenge traditional metrics like batting average and pitcher wins.

Standard GameChanger stats can be misleading in youth baseball, often rewarding lucky hits or punishing pitchers for defensive errors outside of their control. Evaluating MLB-style metrics—like wOBA, FIP, and Range Factor reveals a player's true on-field value. You may not actually know who your best players are.
